The Pollinator Partnership (P2) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization works to protect the health of managed and native pollinating animals vital to wildland and agricultural ecosystems. Founded in 1997, P2 has grown and achieved national status as a leader in pollinator conservation which emphasizes progress and is based in science. The multifaceted approach of targeting stakeholders ranging from farmers, growers, policy makers, industry, academia, education, and the general public has allowed P2 to form strong partnerships with institutions, organizations, corporations, and individuals that share a general concern for the conservation of biological diversity and the species that provide essential ecosystem services. The targeted focus on pollinators, however, is unique and is complemented by working relationships and alliances with other conservation institutions.
As the parent organization of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) and in partnership with NAPPC partners, P2 includes in its successes:
- the signing of 11 major working pollinator-protection agreements with federal government agencies responsible for more than 1.5 billion acres of federally managed-influenced land
- participation in the 2008 Farm Bill to include pollinator programs in conservation and research titles
- working with the USDA Secretary of Agriculture and with the US Senate to create “National Pollinator Week” at both federal and state levels
- awarding research grants to learn about aspects of health for the crisis-threatened honey bee
- development of 31 web-based eco-regional planting guides for all regions of the U.S. to prepare the way for healthy pollinator-friendly landscapes across millions of farms, homes, schools, parks and corporate landscapes
- promotion of importance of pollinators to food producers and retailers reliant upon these animals for their products

P2 seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial, experienced, and dedicated Executive Director to lead it to the next level of programmatic, financial, and organizational success. The Executive Director will build on P2’s achievements to date by facilitating expansion of its programs, leveraging and fostering partnerships to achieve measurable results in pollinator conservation, significantly increasing P2’s revenue and membership, and providing leadership in developing the organization’s staff and Board of Directors. The successful candidate will have the passion, tenacity, and leadership skills necessary to guide the organization as it grows and evolves to implement and support pollinator conservation efforts around the world. The structure and timeline for establishing this presence will be determined by the Executive Director in consultation with P2’s Board.
This is a high-profile opportunity for a dynamic conservation professional with the ability to scale up the organization, expand its funding base, manage senior level staff, and communicate P2’s vision and goals to external partners, stakeholders, and the public. The Executive Director will work to achieve P2’s goals in collaboration with the P2 Board of Directors, staff, and external partners. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Executive Director will perform the following and other duties as assigned:
Program Oversight and Strategy
- Effectively and passionately articulate and implement P2’s conservation goals and strategic plan, working closely with the board and staff to align programs with strategic priorities.
- Oversee all programs and operations, ensuring that all activities are consistent with P2’s mission, appropriate goals and objectives are established for all programs, and expectations are met or exceeded.
- Ensure that P2 remains science-based, working closely with scientists and wildlife experts in government agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector.
- Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other stakeholders
- Oversee the design and implementation of national and international outreach and advocacy strategies to improve public policies related to pollinator conservation.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in pollinator biology, management, and conservation.
- Represent and promote P2 externally to funders, partners, and the public.
- Raise the profile and visibility of P2 and build creative and enduring alliances by expanding awareness of P2’s program achievements, building on the organization’s reputation as a credible and accessible resource.
- Design the national and international expansion and complete the strategic business planning process for the program expansion into new markets; begin to build partnerships and funding relationships in new markets.
- Work with the P2 Board and staff development team to create and execute a diversified fundraising plan to significantly increase revenue from various sources, both established and new, including major donors, foundations, multilateral organizations, governmental entities, and membership.
- Lead and motivate staff to achieve P2’s maximum potential by promoting an organizational culture and structure that fosters communication, collaboration, teamwork, and trust.
- Provide leadership, direction, and support for all staff and directly supervise senior staff.
- Build and sustain among P2’s staff a culture of common purpose toward achieving P2’s mission.
- Cultivate and sustain a productive and mutually supportive relationship with the Board of Directors; serve as ex-officio of each committee; seek and build board involvement at all operational levels
- Assist in the identification and recruitment of additional strong board members.
- Work with the Board Treasurer and Board Finance Committee to prepare annual budgets for review and approval by the board.
- Ensure that P2 maintains official records and documents—financial and otherwise—in compliance with current laws and regulations, that adequate funds are available for P2 to carry out its programs, and that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
The ideal candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in a relevant leadership role including, experience in nonprofit management and board relations
- Advanced degree in a relevant field required; Ph.D. or MBA advanced degree preferred; relevant MS in science, environment or policy will be considered.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, working with diverse funding sources, and leading capital campaigns
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to attract funders and partners by communicating a compelling and inspired sense of purpose
- Experience achieving results in public policy through outreach and advocacy
- Experience implementing conservation initiatives and partnerships internationally
- A strong reputation and network among conservation organizations and leaders in the nonprofit, government, and for-profit sectors
- Demonstrated success in effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff
- Team-building skills and a collaborative leadership style with the ability to empower and inspire staff and encourage staff development, as well as the capacity to enforce accountability and ability to position teams for success
- Demonstrated success in working closely and constructively with a Board of Directors and contribute to board development
- A high level of diplomacy and pragmatism and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of individuals, organizations, and agencies at the regional, national, and international level
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communication style with excellent interpersonal skills
- Commitment to and passion for P2’s mission, vision, and values; unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven evaluation
- Initiative, creativity, an entrepreneurial spirit, and an engaging and energetic demeanor
- Willingness to travel nationally and internationally
- Foreign language skills a plus
Compensation and Location
P2 offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Uniquely, this organization has benefited since its inception from a financial contribution from the current Executive Director in the form of a reduced salary; this is not the expectation for the successor. This position will ideally be located in Washington, DC or San Francisco, CA. Alternative locations may be considered, though it is expected that the Executive Director will initially spend significant time in the San Francisco office on organizational management and transitional issues as needed.
